NOVEMBER 2024 – Thanksgiving Holiday - Reflection & Gratitude

WELCOME !

The Thanksgiving holiday is traditionally the time each year, I reflect, give thanks, and express gratitude for my life.

This is also, the time of year, I set aside to gather with family and friends. If you are like me, I only am able to visit my out of state friends once a year. This year, I asked myself “When did my friends age, slow down, change lifestyle etc.? My realization is yes, I too have aged!

Of course, I know as humans, we age each year, but as we go about our busy lives, especially in the early phase of the aging process we only ask: How can I “age well and keep healthy?” Now my personal challenge is to find a way to embrace and enjoy my life at each phase of the aging process.

I believe you might have heard of the book “Tuesdays with Morrie” authored by Mitch Albom’s. Mitch who interviewed Morrie Schwartz each Tuesday prior to Morrie’s death. During these meetings, Morrie, shared his personal aging experiences of loss and philosophy on staying engaged in life through the aging process.

Rob Schwartz, Morries’s son, found his father’s last manuscript after his father’s death in 2000 while clearing out his father’s desk in his study. As an author himself, Rob decided to honor his father in 2023 by editing and publishing this manuscript. The title of the book is “The Wisdom of Morrie – Living and Aging creatively and joyfully.” Rob Schwartz noted his father “was primarily concerned with improving people’s lives.”

In The Wisdom of Morrie, Morrie offers suggestions through his firsthand experiences as a social psychologist, teacher, father and friend and real-life stories. The book is an insightful reference on how to begin reflecting on: “How you wish to live life?

Morrie’s philosophy on how to live life… “Since we can do nothing about the past and since the

future is unpredictable, and because all we have at any moment is the present, it is of great importance to learn how to be in the present.

I agree with Morrie, I have chosen to actively practice learning how to live my life in the present and enjoy each moment.

Here are two questions for reflection during this holiday season:

  1.    For what are you thankful and grateful?

  2.    What do you want to change in your life at this phase of aging process?

Enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday!

Looking forward to meeting you over a cup of coffee and conversation!
