JANUARY – The “New Year’s resolution”

Reflecting on “Good & Bad Habits.”

Welcome Back !

January, in NYC is the beginning of the frosty winter months and for me I enjoy staying warm reading an informative book and reflecting on creating positive goals for the year ahead.

What are your thoughts on the tradition we call “the New Year’s Resolution”?

  • Do you at the beginning of each year actively set goals in your life to end what you feel are “bad habits”?

  • Do you create a plan to change your behavior to replace your "bad habits" with a “good habit”?

In my exploring how to create “good habits,” I found the book by Harvard Business Review entitled “Emotional Intelligence – GOOD HABITS.” This book has eleven authors who discuss their approaches, strategies, and suggestions on best ways to change one’s bad habits. A sample of the recommendations are below:

  • Reflect on your priorities - keep habits that encourage physical and mental health.

  • Time boxing – feel more in control.

  • Prevent burn out - use mindfulness and compassion.

  • Replace the reward - with curiosity.

  • Enjoyment matters - create immediate benefits and positive experiences.

One suggestion worth reflection is in chapter three (3) titled: The Right way to form new Habits – interview with James Clear by Alison Beard who recommended the strategy to “aim to get 1% better each day “and he summarizes the cost and rewards of good and bad habits as:

  • Good Habits - cost to you is in the present.

  • Bad Habits - cost to you is in the future.

He futher explains : "a lot of the reason bad habits form so readily is immediate outcome - feel great in the moment - good habits rewards in the future.”

What are your habits ?

Looking forward to meeting you over a cup of coffee and conversation in 2024!
